Teaser Tuesdays 11/9

Teaser Tuesdays is a weekly bookish meme, hosted by MizB of Should Be Reading. Anyone can play along! Just do the following:
  • Grab your current read
  • Open to a random page
  • Share two (2) “teaser” sentences from somewhere on that page
  • BE CAREFUL NOT TO INCLUDE SPOILERS! (make sure that what you share doesn’t give too much away! You don’t want to ruin the book for others!)
  • Share the title & author, too, so that other TT participants can add the book to their TBR Lists if they like your teasers!
My entry for this week is from the new biography Cleopatra by Stacy Schiff ~

"Antony replied to Cleopatra's greeting with a dinner invitation. What happened next was revealing of both parties and the kind of behavior Cicero had deplored in each."

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I bought this at Costco this morning on an impulse! I normally don't read non-fiction (perhaps from so many years in school reading heavy textbooks) but I couldn't pass this up! I don't know much about Cleopatra but I've always found her fascinating and I've heard a lot of good things about this book.
I'm always a slow reader with non-fiction, so it may take me awhile to get through it but I'm looking forward to it!
The Okra Picks Challenge
I was so excited to find the Okra Picks Challenge hosted by Bermuda Onion! For a long time, I've been meaning to add more southern writers to my reading list so I thought this would be the perfect opportunity!
If you're wondering what the "Okra Picks" are, here is a brief description from Bermuda Onion's blog:
Each season, SIBA (Southern Independent Booksellers Alliance) selects a crop of Southern books to handsell and those books are called Okra Picks.   Okra Picks authors are given a sash to wear at the trade show, and believe me when I tell you those sashes are worn with pride!
She has a list of this year's picks posted there as well!
I have committed to reading 8 Okra Picks, putting me at the Peach level. The challenge will be running from October 1, 2010 through March 31, 2011.
If you'd like to sign up, simply follow the link above to her blog!
2010 Holiday Reading Challenge
This year I'll be participating in the 2010 Holiday Reading Challenge hosted by Nely at All About {n}.
The challenge runs from November 15 through December 31, 2010. I'm committing to read 5 books but hopefully I'll be able to read more!
Here are 3 books that I'm planning on reading (not sure about the rest yet)
1. Promise Me by Richard Paul Evans
2. White Christmas Pie by Wanda E. Brunstetter
3. An Amish Christmas by Cynthia Keller
In the spirit of the season I'm going to keep it all Christmas related books!
If you'd like to sign up for the challenge, simply head over to her blog!
